Heat eliminate Pacers, return to NBA Finals

The Miami Heat was determined enough to close out the series in Miami, Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals defeating the Indiana Pacers 117-92 for the second straight year. The Heat advance to the NBA Finals for the fourth consecutive time becoming just the third franchise in NBA history to do that since the 1984-87 Boston Celtics, teams for which Pacers president of basketball operations Larry Bird played.

Indiana led the East for much of the regular season, one where the Pacers were fueled by the memory of losing Game 7 of the East finals in Miami a year ago. But being on top didn't seemed to be enough to beat the two-time defending champions since the playoffs became a totally different level and the Heat, just at the right time level up their game as well.

Spurs show no mercy, rout Thunder in Game 5 to take 3-2 lead

After cruising on Games 3 and 4 to even the series at 2-2, the Oklahoma City Thunder was convincingly defeated by the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals, 117-89 to lead the series at 3-2 and one win away from going back to the NBA Finals for the second consecutive time.

The Spurs, like only they can, had seven players score nine points or more and were led by Tim Duncan's 22 and Manu Ginobili's 19. Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green each had 14 points, Boris Diaw added 13 and Tony Parker scored 12 for the Spurs.

San Antonio's crowd was aggressive from the start, booing Westbrook heavily during pregame introductions and erupting joyously when Green scored the team's first points on a 3-pointer 1 1/2 minutes into the game. "This is the craziest series I've ever been involved in," Spurs legend Tim Duncan said.

After losing twice in Oklahoma City by an average of 11 points, San Antonio upped its winning margin in San Antonio to 26.7 points. …

Pacers stay alive as they beat the Heat 93-90 in Game 5

Paul George and the Indiana Pacers showed they wanted to extend the series and did not let the Miami Heat bury them again in their own court winning 93-90 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals while the four-time MVP, Lebron James scored a playoff career-low seven points, played a playoff career-low in minutes and had his second-worst playoff shooting performance (20% on 10 shots).

George scored 37 points, 31 of that was on the second half. On the other side, Lebron James watched helplessly from the bench as Miami's lead slipped away. James never got into rhythm playing with 5 fouls and just contributed 7 points, two rebounds and four assists in 24 minutes.

Without James' usual contributions, Miami's supporting cast tried to bail him out. Bosh had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Dwyane Wade and Rashard Lewis each finished with 18 points and the Heat were 15 of 31 from beyond the arc — and it still wasn't enough.

James almost made enough plays for the victory. He hit a thr…

Thunder dominates Game 4, tie series at 2-2

The San Antonio Spurs had a total meltdown and let the Oklahoma City Thunder take full control of Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals defeating the Spurs 105-92 to tie the series at 2-2 after being down 0-2.

After Serge Ibaka's return in Game 3 which the Thunder won 106-97, OKC seemed to finally complete the Thunder puzzle that would make the Spurs to prove itself yet again. Russel Westbrook and Kevin Durant became so effective scoring 40 points, ten assists and 31 points respectively. Ibaka added eight points and nine rebounds for the team.

Oklahoma City dominated for the second consecutive game after getting blown out in the first two. The Thunder committed just seven turnovers and shot 49 percent from the field.
The Spurs scored the first eight points of the game, but things went downhill from there. A steal and dunk by Westbrook gave the Thunder a 42-32 lead with just under five minutes left in the first half. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Durant pushed Oklahoma City's lead…

Heat win Game 4, lead the series 3-1

The Miami Heat led from start to finish, thumped the Indiana Pacers 102-90 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals on Tuesday (Philippine Time) and sent them back to Indiana in major predicament.

Chris Bosh comes alive and started everything for the Heat. After being unnoticed on the first three games of the series, Bosh had a really hot hand and scored 25 points (3-5, 3pt FG). Lebron James once again had an MVP-like game with 32 points, ten rebounds, five assists and surpassed Michael Jordan to have at least 25 points, five rebounds and five assists in a playoff game. Dwayne Wade also contributed 15 points.

Paul George scored 23 points and David West added 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Pacers, who got 15 points from George Hill. But Lance Stephenson - who made news in the days between Games 3 and 4 by suggesting he was in James' head - was held to nine and 7-foot-2 center Roy Hibbert was scoreless in 22 minutes for Indiana.

The Heat played Game 4 without forwar…

Thunder beat Spurs 106-97, avoid 3-0 disadvantage

The Oklahoma City Thunder looked like a different team when they returned home and beat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals 106-97 with Serge Ibaka's dramatic return from what was thought to be season-ending left calf strain.

Ibaka started after missing the first two games of the series and scored 15 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Kevin Durant and Russel Westbrook seemed to have  gained their confidence back with Ibaka on the floor with them scoring 25 points and 10 rebounds and 26 points, eight rebounds and seven assists respectively.

''Obviously Serge came in and gave us a big lift not only on the defensive end but the offensive end,'' Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. The Thunder originally said he would miss the rest of the playoffs but changed course Friday. His presence helped the Thunder dominate and cut the Spurs' lead in the series to 2-1.

Meanwhile, a vintage Manu Ginobili played for the Spurs with 23 points (6…

Heat despite slow start, beat Pacers in Game 3

The Miami Heat after being down 0-1 in the series is now leading 2-1 after beating the Indiana Pacers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals, 99-87 on Sunday (Philippine Time).

David West started strong for the Pacers in the first half which gave them a 42-38 lead heading into the locker room. Meanwhile, Coach Spoelstra of the Miami Heat tried to wake the team up and said, "Impose our identity". Heat's two best players Lebron James and Dwayne Wade eventually led the way for the team to get back on track again and  James' dunk with 7:36 remaining in the third put Miami up for the first time, 52-51. Since then, both teams are already exchanging shots and had several lead changes.

Lebron James, four-time MVP even suffered with what appeared to be a hamstring cramp seconds left on the third quarter but Dwayne Wade who was brought in for Lebron responded with a 3-pointer and gave the Heat a 74-67 lead going into the fourth.

It suddenly became a totally different story i…

Spurs upset Durant and the Thunder to take 2-0 lead

The San Antonio Spurs showed no mercy to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals with a landslide victory 112-77. Tony Parker scored 22 points, Danny Green made seven 3-pointers with 21 points, Tim Duncan added 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Manu Ginobili and Boris Diaw had 11 points apiece off the bench.

Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant and Russel Westbrook each had 15 points which was very unusual for that of the star-duo. They combined to shoot 13 for 40, including 4 for 14 in the fourth quarter.

The Thunder led by two after the first quarter, and neither team had a lead that extended past six points. But a 25-8 run from San Antonio made them establish a 58-44 lead into halftime.

Durant blames himself for their loss and said, "I messed up the end of the second quarter ... It was my fault. I take responsibility for that."

Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook didn't do enough Wednesday to make up for Serge Ibaka's loss, w…

Hang Gliding: The Not So Extreme Sports and a Case For Deckchair Aviation

Many of us have been inspired to fly, but for some reason, the burdens of life or circumstances have stopped us.

Once, I wanted to learn how to hang glide. I attended an initial primer near my home city of Perth, but was sorely disappointed by what I saw. Without naming the company (yet it was the only one in my state), we faced multiple problems. Bad weather, equipment was broken often – I watched the hang gliding school repairing equipment out in the flight areas. Instructors were late. It was a combination of things both controllable and uncontrollable that turned me off the scene.

I spent a total of five days baking in the hot Australian sun, with little heat tornadoes spawning around me. I’d only actually paid for two days. The chief instructor had attempted to “make things right” by simply giving me another chance to come along for “free”. The end solution was always the same. I got nothing - I never flew. Five days in the blazing and unfiltered Australian sun had left me with …
